Anti-Spam Techniques
- First and foremost, NEVER EVER EVER EVER click on their 'Click here to be removed' or other such links promising to remove you from their mailing list. This only verifies for them that your email address is valid. This only results in the amount of spam increasing (as you have noticed). Eventually, after never getting any kind of response from your email address, the tide will slow.
- When using "auto responders" on your account such as vacation messages or out of office replies can cause your account to get blacklisted, used by spammers or put on spamming lists. Spammers will use your auto responder to send out their spam by faking the "From" address so that it will reply to the "From" address making your address look like a spammer. If you must use your auto responder try to use it for short periods of times and not for an extended time, if you are going to be gone for an extended period of time it is best to have your emails forward to another email address that someone is monitoring for you.
- You can purchase anti-spam software that will work with whatever email client you are using (Outlook Express?). IHateSpam has gotten great reviews every time we see them and is pretty cheap for a home user. Although we provide spam protection, ultimately it is up to you to make sure you are protected in a fashion that suits you.
- Do not enter your email address into ANY online forms. Now, we realize there are times you will have to. Our suggestion is to have two email addresses, one for entering on online forms that you don't care if it gets spammed (maybe a yahoo or hotmail acct?), and one for business and regular correspondences.
- Download AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy, install both, then run both one at a time. Make sure to get updates before running scans. Remove anything they find, reboot, and scan again. Spammers are big users of spyware and adware.
- Forward all the spam emails you are getting that are slipping through our spam filter to reportspam@mtpinternet.com. This sends the spam to me and to the company that manufactures our email spam blocking software. The more spam sent to them the more they can evaluate and block more spam with the next set of updates (they usually release anti-spam updates every couple months). We will also examine the message and see if we can find a way to block it without blocking legitimate email.
- If you are receiving false spam, which are emails that are legitimist and have been marked as spam please forward them to falsespam@mtpinternet.com, this way we can put them into the White List to allow them to come through as normal.
